Boxing has been a part of the Peña family for over a decade. Inspired by his grandfather Feliciano Garcia, Coach Hector's boxing career began at the age of 10 years old. He quickly learned that boxing was in his blood and set out to become a world champion. Throughout his teenage years, Hector took home 5 Dallas Golden Glove titles as well as being a 2 time state runner-up as an amateur. His professional debut was on September 14, 1972. During his career, he went 13-3-3. His professional days came to an early end in 1976 due to an unforseen family tragedy. Hector was not ready to hang up the gloves and his transition into a coaching role began when he started coaching his son's and their friends. He began the West Side Boxing Club in the 1980s and has since been a staple in the community for young boxers wanting to learn the sport.
For the last 40 years, Hector Peña has served his community by coaching. He has been associated with many organizations throughout the years and continues to share his love of boxing with others. The idea for the Peña Boxing Club was born in a restaurant in late 2018 after the facility Hector was coaching at abruptly closed. With no outlet to serve the community, he felt that it was time to hang up the gloves. His eldest granddaughter, Ariel, has always been an advocate for community programs, volunteering and has held leadership roles in various community projects. Her dream has always been to serve youth in an afterschool program type capacity. Upon hearing this news, she knew this was the perfect opportunity to fuse both of their passions together. Thus, the Peña Boxing Club was born!
At the end of the day what sets the Peña Boxing Club apart from others is family. From the time you set foot in our facility to the time you leave, you will feel like a part of our extended family. It's not uncommon for our members to greet everyone with a smile and fist bump. We pride ourselves in teaching old school boxing techniques as well as practical mannerisms that extend beyond our four walls. There is more to boxing than technique - it's about having discipline, heart, and building mental and physical strength. To us, it's not about money or how many competitions we can win or how many trophies we can display; it's about instilling values that will live on far after the gloves have retired. To us, boxing is just the cherry on top.
Come be a part of our story, we'd love to have you!
